The Retailer's Guide to Transforming a Non-Working Team - Part 1

Many retailers ask me what to do when their team doesn't work well. So, I am writing another blog to help you improve your team’s performance. This time, it’s a detailed, two-part guide.

If you run an apparel store, you probably already know the importance of having an inspired team. Your sales staff is the backbone of your business. So, you must make sure that your staff is passionate and committed to their work. A lot depends on how you treat them.

So, what can you do to build up the spirit of your staff and inspire them to support you in making your retail business successful?

Build the Morale of Your Retail Staff Consistently

  • Respect: Your staff members deserve respect. Give them respect, and they will give you their best work in return. When you treat your team with kindness and understanding, they feel valued and work harder.

  • Appreciation: Always appreciate your staff members in front of everyone. When you notice something good, speak up and let everyone know. However, if you need to correct them for something they did wrong, always do it in private. This keeps their dignity intact.

  • Passion: Do all you can to keep the enthusiasm and passion high in your team. Encourage them, share exciting news, and keep the energy positive.

  • Involvement: Get your staff members involved in your company’s growth. Show them the path and ask them for suggestions on improving the different aspects of the store. When they feel like they are part of the bigger picture, they will work harder.

  • Delegation: Instead of just telling them what to do, try to delegate tasks in writing. This creates greater accountability and helps them remember their duties.

  • Brand Image: Create your brand image and make your entire staff look consistent with your brand image. When your team looks and feels professional, customers will notice.

  • Belonging: Design matching uniforms for your staff, preferably using your brand’s logo and colors. It will give them a sense of belonging and pride.
